by Last night at the Oscars Chris Rock made a comment about Will Smith’s wife as a joke. At first, it looked like Will Smith was laughing just like everyone else. But he then looked at his wife and began to walk up to Chris, and then proceeded to slap him in the face. Chris tried to just move on from unexpected event, and during a commercial break, Will was comforted by a few other people.
A few minutes later, Will is awarded an Oscar and gives a emotional speech, apologizing to the Academy. Neither of these two people were in the right in this situation, and social media has been buzzing today about who was right. It was not right for Chris to make a joke about Will’s wife. Jokes are only funny if everyone is laughing, not if it makes some people laugh and others embarrassed. However, what Will did was not ok either. Anywhere else what he did would have been in serious trouble and certainly would not have walked back to his seat.
UPDATE: Just in the last half hour Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock and to the audience that was watching and said that it was not right for him to do that and that he is a work in progress. He said he was out of line and his actions did not match what he wanted to be.
