Introduction

Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is back after nearly 30 years. After intel finds that an enemy has made uranium refinery in a very fortified area, the government assembles all of the best pilots that they have. Maverick is called to train them for this very dangerous and nearly impossible mission. Will he be able to teach the pilots how to fly this mission and can it even be done? And even if it can be done, will these heroes be able to make it home?

Ripe Apples

Maverick wants to do his best to train these pilots to beat the mission. He wants to see everyone come home safely. Therefore, he does his best to train them with everything he has. He teaches them with discipline because he doesn’t want to go easy on them because the task ahead is not easy and they need to be prepared for the worst. He also teaches them to become a team.

Rooster lost his father, Goose, in an accident in the last film and at the beginning of this film he does not trust Maverick after what happened to his father. He also blames Maverick for pulling his papers and setting him 4 years back on his career. Maverick only did this cause Rooster’s mom didn’t want to lose her son as well, but Maverick doesn’t want Rooster to hate his own mother so he takes the fall. As the film progresses, however, Rooster begins to learn how to forgive Maverick for what happened and they become teammates and friends.

Even though the lives of all of these pilots are at stake, they don’t give up on the mission because if they don’t do this mission many people will die. Maverick is seen giving everything he has for the mission and for others. Other pilots are seen giving their all to help each other.

Ice Man, Maverick’s old rival, helps Maverick realize that some things are not forever and that at some point you need to let go of your past and move on to the future. This is a great lesson to learn for the audience.

Hangman is one of the more cocky pilots on the team, but when he is not picked for the mission, he is humbled. He realizes somewhat that it isn’t all about him but he is still there when he is needed.

Rotten Apples

The violence in this film involves a lot of gunfire. We don’t really see anyone get shot, but there are a lot of dog fights. Lot of explosions are seen. We see some blood. The violence isn’t actually as bad as I expected for this film but it still gives you that war feeling.

The sexual content in this film is very mild. We see a few shirtless guys, some of them at the beach. Some women at the beach are in bikinis. We see one scene in which is hinted that Maverick and a woman sleep together, but we only see Maverick shirtless, and no nudity is shown. The scene ends when they get on the bed.

We see a few scenes in which the team is at a bar and they are seen drinking, but we do not see anyone act really drunk.

We hear a lot of cussing in this film. The s word is used probably about 25 times, some in a burst of 5 or more at one time. We do hear holy combined with some of those. The Lord’s name is misused a few times and we hear a few uses of “d-m-.” We hear 1 f bomb. We hear about someone “having balls.” The language in this film is very high, which is pretty much the biggest thing wrong with the movie.

Additional Thoughts

This movie is great. The plot is well put together, and the stakes are shown very well. The fact that the planes aren’t CGI really makes the movie feel even more real. You feel like you’re actually in the skies with Maverick and his team fighting the enemy. The sound is great as well. The soundtrack is amazing. This film has the perfect balance of action, drama, romance, and comedy.

The lessons this film teaches are great for everyone to see. We don’t get many lessons from Hollywood anymore, just action or politics. There is not really any politics in this film which makes it even better. I think it is a great movie that I would watch again and again because it is just written so well.

I also like some of the lines that are in the film, especially when Maverick tells Rooster not to think when he’s in the air. Later on Rooster does something that Maverick didn’t want him to do and Maverick says: “What were you thinking?!” Rooster comes back with: “You told me not to think!” This is downright hilarious.

Conclusion

In the end, this is a great film. It is written really well. I didn’t even see the first Top Gun before watching this film but it still was easy to follow and overall a great film. It’s refreshing to see a film that isn’t focused on politics be so successful at Hollywood. The main drawback of this movie is the language, which I would note if you watch this film. Nevertheless, I hope you do watch this film. Let us know what you think about it in the comments!
