Introduction

Sonic is an alien hedgehog that had to leave his home world because there were evil people that wanted to take his power from him. However, before that could happen, the animal that was protecting him sent him to Earth with strict rules to hide and not let himself be seen. Sonic successfully had stayed hidden for many years, but when he accidentally shuts down the power to an entire country the world begins to go crazy.

Some are calling it an act of terrorism, but they don’t know what it truly is. Therefore, they call in an expert to figure out the solution. The expert’s name is Dr. Robotnik, and he sets out to find the source of this unlimited energy. Meanwhile, Sonic runs into Tom, a cop that is getting ready to transfer from his home town to San Francisco. Tom accidentally gets involved and he must help Sonic leave Earth before Dr. Robotnik captures him.

Ripe Apples

Sonic is very careless at the beginning of this film. However, he learns the same lesson that Spiderman does, “with great power comes great responsibility.” We see Sonic learn to be less careless and care more about others than just himself.

Tom has a big plan to save the life of others, and he leads a noble life. He accepts the blame for what he did to Sonic (he tranquilized him which led Dr. Robotnik to Sonic) and he wants to fix his mistake and help Sonic get away from earth.

At the end of the film, Sonic and Tom grow their friendship and they learn that it is important to fight for each other and have each other’s backs. They also take turns doing things on each other’s bucket list so that they can make the most out of their friendship.

Rotten Apples

The violence in this film is mostly explosions and punches. Gunfire is seen but no one is actually shot. A bar fight is also seen in one scene. No blood is seen in this movie.

We hear some sexual references that kids probably wouldn’t pick up on. Tom makes up a joke that he is on a beach with a woman when he really is at a speed trap and his coworkers says “send pics.” This is really quick and would probably be missed by kids. We also hear Dr. Robotnik talk about how he spit up formula as a child and says that Tom probably did the same but Tom comes back with “Actually I was breastfed.” We hear Tom’s sister-in-law try to convince Tom’s wife to divorce Tom in multiple scenes. We also see some toilet humor mostly surrounding toilet paper. We hear one joke about lightning coming out of Sonic’s butt.

Sonic and Tom are in a bar in one scene. Tom drinks a beer but no one is seen drunk. As I said above there is a bar fight in one scene.

We hear multiple name-calls in this movie such as “Officer Brain Fart,” “Donut Lord,” and “Blue Devil.” We also here one use of “h-ll” and heck. We hear an unfinished “son of a.” We also hear the Lord’s name misused twice, once as the abbreviation the other time the full thing.

Additional Thoughts

This film is fun and for the most part it is family friendly. I especially enjoyed the funny and appropriate pop culture references that this film had. I grew up watching Sonic cartoons every Saturday morning and I believe that the movie creators did a good job at bringing Sonic to the big screen. The plot was very solid and they set up a great sequel. The comedy in this movie is also really clever and will have you crying in tears of joy

Conclusion

Will Sonic be able to escape Earth, or will he have to face Dr. Robotnik? The answer is revealed in this fast-paced, humorous film that I highly recommend. It is great for a family movie night. However, be sure to note the rotten apples, even though they are not as bad as some kids films that have been coming out recently. Want to buy this movie? Click the link below!
