Why I Still Buy DVDs in 2024

Introduction

In a digital age, we are buying everything digitally. Whenever we buy music, we buy mp3 files, we don’t buy CDs. Instead of reading paper-back books, we read articles on the computer or books on a Kindle. The same is true for movies and TV shows. Instead of buying Blu-ray discs or DVDs, we either rent or buy digital films if we want to own the film. If we don’t want to own the film, we might check to see what streaming service it is on so we can watch it and hundreds of other films we want at a monthly price.

However, as a movie lover and fan, I continue to buy DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Some may wonder, why would you buy something that is not going to be sold in a few years? In this post, I’m going to explain why I continue to buy DVDs in this digital age.

DVDs are going extinct

With more and more stores getting rid of their DVD sections in their stores, people are beginning to wonder how much longer DVDs are going to be around for before everything becomes digital. DVD’s are becoming harder to find, even online. Why would you buy a DVD of a film if you can watch it free with a streaming service that you subscribe to?

Why I continue to buy DVDs

There are many reasons that I continue to buy DVDs, and some of my reasons may seem crazy to some, but in the end, this is just how I personally feel. When I purchase a DVD, I know that I have that film in my collection. I can watch that film whenever I want, and I don’t have to worry if the streaming service that I subscribe to still has the film I want to see. Knowing I have the film I want to see brings me comfort.

Another reason I continue to buy DVDs is just the feeling of owning a copy of the film. When you buy a film digitally or watch it on a streaming service, you don’t feel like you own the film as much as if you have a physical copy at home. I’m a movie collector at heart and collecting movies is a hobby of mine, so owning DVDs is something I personally like to do.

One last reason that I continue to buy films is because I always like to have backups of my favorite films. In 10-15 years, some of the films I like to watch may not even be available online for me to purchase. If you think that this may be far-fetched, just look at some of the Disney classics that have been edited and its very hard to find the original film. And that’s just one example.

Conclusion

Is buying DVDs in 2024 a waste of money? Personally I do not believe that it is, but to others, having films available online may be more convenient since it saves on storage space and it is just one click to watch a film. However, I still think having a physical copy of all my favorite films is something I like to do. What do you prefer, physical or digital copies? Let me know if the comments!
