I don’t know what you did to celebrate May the 4th, but we watched Revenge of the Sith– the birth of Darth Vader and two little ankle-biters named Luke and Leia. When we sat down to try to decide which of the Star Wars content to watch, this was by far the most meme-filled, and we all enjoyed it, but a discussion did commence as to which movie should come first if you wanted to watch them all.
Being partial to the Machete Order myself, I repeated the line that the first movie, The Phantom Menace, could easily be skipped and is more fan fiction than anything else. Everyone agreed that the last 3 that have been made could be skipped. But then I noticed something interesting Monday morning:
Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace is the second highest grossing movie at the weekend box office. The prequel film is currently in theaters for a re-release marking its 25th anniversary and in time for May 4, which has become known as Star Wars Day. After the credits concluded during The Phantom Menace‘s re-release, there was also an exclusive look at The Acolyte, Disney+’s next live-action Star Wars television series that premieres on June
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Phantom Menace grossed $8.1 million, with only The Fall Guy beating it out at $28.5 million. The Phantom Menace came ahead of the Zendaya-led Challengers, which earned $7.1 million in its second weekend, and the new horror film Tarot, which opened to $6.5 million. While The Fall Guy is number one at the weekend box office, it underperformed below the expectations of a $30 to $35 million debut.
Star Wars: Phantom Menace Re-Release Beats All But 1 New Movie At The Box Office
How could a movie this old and so derided end up #2 this weekend?
- It was the only Star Wars movie people could see in the theater for May the 4th
- Other than Fall Guy, everything was in its second week
- Star Wars “content” has gotten to the point where, comparatively, The Phantom Menace would be decent!
