Overview
Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.
Introduction
Sonic and his friends are back! Dr. Robotnik was defeated, and Sonic and his friends finally get a chance to relax with Tom and Maddie. However, their vacation doesn’t last long because it turns out that G.U.N. had a secret that they had been keeping from Team Sonic. This secret was that there was another alien just like them named Shadow. Shadow has a dark past and has been in suspended animation for the last 50 years. Now that he has awoken and is back for revenge, it is up to Team Sonic to find him and stop him from carrying out his mission.
Ripe Apples
Sonic and Shadow have some very similar pasts. However, when they both lost someone they cared about, they both took different approaches at that trial. Sonic found a family and was able to mature and grow to face his pain. Shadow became consumed with pain and revenge. At one point in this film, Sonic begins to be consumed with pain. He leaves his friends behind and begins to become like Shadow. He stops before it’s too late, but it goes to show the importance of facing our pain and avoiding revenge.
This film has a great lesson that revenge and pain will never help fix the past. Shadow and Sonic learn that they must face their pain but not let it control who they are. This is a great lesson that can apply to any person that watches this film.
Dr. Robotnik felt defeated and without a purpose after his last loss to Sonic. Throughout the film, Robotnik changes sides a few times. However, at the end of the film, he realizes that he can help save the earth, because destroying it is wrong. Dr. Robotnik gives his all to help save earth in the end and has some very nice words to say to his assistant at the end of the film.
Rotten Apples
There are a few fights that involve punching and kicking. Some G.U.N. agents have guns that they use to shoot at people. A few explosions are also seen. Shadow has a dark past, and we get some flashbacks of his friend who died in an explosion. We see a few people who have some blood on them, but not much since this is a PG movie. Overall, very similar violence to the first and second film.
Dr. Robotnik makes a few sexist remarks. Since he has gained some weight, he refers to himself having “man-boobs.” Manscaping is mentioned as well. Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather makes a remark about women being in the military. The grandfather is also seen spanking his grandson in one scene. Dr. Robotnik also mentions he is unable to attract “any of the hundreds of genders.”
There is no drug or alcohol content in this film. The Lord’s name is misused once or twice. The d word is heard twice. The h and a word are each used once. “B—d” is used once.
Conclusion
Overall, this was a great addition to the Sonic franchise. The background story that then gave to Shadow really helped build his character and Keanu Reeves did a great job voicing the character. Jim Carrey gave two great performances that had me laughing a ton through this film. Other than a few comments, I’d say this film is mostly family friendly, just like the previous Sonic films. If you are looking for a film to watch with the family this Christmas season, I highly recommend Sonic 3!
