With Obi-Wan Kenobi only a few days away, we have decided that we would rank the 3 films that came in before this series that have been collectively named “The Prequel Trilogy.” For each film we will talk about what we liked, and what we didn’t like for each film’s plot. Let us know in the comments if you agree or disagree with our picks.
Note there will be spoilers for these film’s plots!
3. The Phantom Menace
What was good about this film:
This film set up the Prequel Trilogy, but a lot of Star Wars fans hate this film. Despite this fact, there are some good things about this film to mention. Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn was a great character to see in action as he trained both Obi-Wan and Anakin. He really helped set up the Prequel Trilogy and a lot of fans wish we could see more of him in the franchise.
We also get to see Anakin when he was a child and begin to see where he gets some of his character traits that we see in later films. We also get to see him meet Padme and the start of their relationship.
This film lets the viewers get to see young Obi-Wan Kenobi while he is a padawan. While he is still young, Obi-Wan is a great character to follow his life as he becomes a powerful Jedi Knight.
What was bad about this film:
Jar Jar is everyone’s first problem with this movie. This character really doesn’t have much of a point and a lot of people hate him because of various reasons.
We also see that Padme and Anakin have a significant age difference which feels weird when you watch later films. They should have made Anakin a little older and then it would have made more sense.
Darth Maul did not get a lot of screen time. When he did get to be onscreen it was quick and it could have lasted longer but we only see him onscreen for maybe 15 minutes of this movie.
2. Attack of the Clones
What was good about this film:
We get to see a lot more action from Jedis in this film. We also get to see Obi-Wan try to teach Anakin the path of the Jedi and wants to make him an even better Jedi than himself.
This film also sets up Anakin’s relationship with Padme and shows how they want to keep it a secret. Anakin’s mother dies and Padme is there to help Anakin through the trials. They get married at the end of the film.
This film also shows that the Republic is becoming more into an empire as the Republic grants Chancellor Palpatine the supreme leadership to send clones into battle, which later will be Stormtroopers.
What was bad about this film:
This film is very slow at some points. However it helps grow the plot for the next film so therefore this film is needed.
The final fight was interesting in this film as it was a rescue mission to save Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme. However, if the Separatists really wanted Padme dead, why would they go through a execution when they could just kill her and get it over with without giving her a chance to escape. This felt really dumb for the Separatists especially when they had bounty hunters hunting to kill her at the beginning of the film.
1. Revenge of the Sith
What was good about this film:
This film shows Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side and we see the Dark Side rise to power. This sets up what will happen in Obi-Wan Kenobi as well as A New Hope.
We also see an epic lightsaber scene with Obi-Wan and Anakin fighting to the death. This remains the best lightsaber fight to date. There are hopes that in the rematch in Obi-Wan Kenobi that we will get to see them fight again.
I also like that we see Luke and Leia be born and how they are given to different families to protect them from Darth Vader. It sets up Obi-Wan Kenobi and A New Hope perfectly which gives older viewers more insight about their favorite characters and younger viewers a prelude for the original trilogy.
What was bad about this film:
I didn’t find too much wrong with this film. However, if anything, I would find that some of the most powerful Jedi were sent to kill Chancellor Palpatine, and they all got killed like they were nothing. One other thing that didn’t make a lot of sense is that Anakin planned to overthrow the Emperor with Padme but once Padme died, Anakin just became the Emperor’s apprentice, which was kind of interesting.
